Graphic Novels and Comics March 2016
|
|
Hello there! My name is Patrick Holt, and I'm a librarian at Southwest Regional Library. I'm also a lifelong reader of comics and graphic novels. Check out the contents of this month's newsletter in the box to the left, and get access to past editions in the archive at the bottom of the page. I hope you find these recommendations worthwhile, and please email me at pdholt@dconc.gov if you have any thoughts or questions.

The New Deal
by Jonathan Case
From the publisher: "The Waldorf Astoria is the classiest hotel along the Manhattan skyline in 1930s New York City. When a charming woman named Nina checks in with a high-society entourage, young Frank, a bellhop, and Theresa, a maid, get caught up in a series of mysterious thefts. The stakes quickly grow perilous, and the pair must rely on each other to discover the truth while navigating delicate class politics."

Alabaster Shadows
by Matt Gardner and Rashad Doucet
From the publisher: "Carter Normandy knows there's something weird about the neighborhood he and his family move into. Maybe it's the physics-defying leak in the basement, or the way all the adults seem to look down on kids like they're scum. With the help of his new friends, Carter discovers a whole other world alongside his seemingly normal community-a world filled with terrifying monsters. A world the adults of the community already know all about. Now it's up to Carter and his friends to keep these monsters from crossing over into our world, or face the dire consequences!"

B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth 12: Metamorphosis
by Mike Mignola and others
From the publisher: "Following a devastating mission in the mountains, Johann and his troops take on an easy assignment destroying a monster. But things go bad when the civilians protecting it fight back and the Bureau agents turn against Johann, leading to a traumatic turning point in the ghost agent's career."

Witchfinder vol. 3: The Mysteries of Unland
by Newman, McHugh, Crook and Stewart
From the publisher (and the pages of Hellboy): "Sir Edward Grey is sent to Hallum to investigate the death of a crown-appointed official, but once he is there he hears rumors of the mysterious Unland, the wetlands around the town, and the creatures that inhabit it. Grey's skepticism of the murder vanishes when he encounters the monsters of Unland, and he realizes that Hallam is a place of secrets." More Tyler Crook-drawn comics, I say!

The Fade Out: Act One
by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips
From the publisher: "[A]n epic noir set in the world of noir itself, the backlots and bars of Hollywood at the end of its Golden Era. A movie stuck in endless reshoots, a writer damaged from the war and lost in the bottle, a dead movie star and the lookalike hired to replace her. Nothing is what it seems in the place where only lies are true."

Southern Bastards Vol. 1: Here Was a Man
by Jason Aaron and Jason Latour
Murder, football, BBQ, and objectionable language: welcome to Craw County, Alabama. Thomas Noel at The Hip Campus calls Southern Bastards "a very bloody, very engrossing Southern Gothic crime pulp... like [television shows] True Detective Season One, The Walking Dead or True Blood." The book's writer, Alabama native Jason Aaron, says about his inspiration that “The South is more peaceful than any other place I’ve ever been. But more primal too. More timeless. But more haunted. More spiritual. More hateful. More beautiful. More scarred. And that’s what this series is about. About a place you can love and hate and fear and miss all at the same time.”

100 Bullets (series)
by Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso
From the publsiher: "This dark and intriguing Eisner Award-winning series features a mysterious agent named Graves who approaches ordinary citizens and gives them an opportunity to exact revenge on a person who has wronged them. Offering his clients an attaché case containing proof of the deed and a gun, he guarantees his 'clients' full immunity for all of their actions, including murder."
