Library Journal Review
With this unusual manual, readers can follow numerous gradual instructions as they refer to the dozens of unique full-alphabet samples provided. Beginning chapters briefly discuss the intriguing history of writing, paper, and printing, including background on illuminated manuscripts. Terminology on letterforms and fonts is provided both in the "Getting Started" chapter and in the helpful glossary. Scripts and languages used as inspiration for exercises include Arabic, Diwani, and Japanese. One exercise walks readers through making their own simple sketchbooks in which to practice their letters. Pen and ink, brushwork, relief printing, and collage methods are covered. Images, patterns, symbols, and a generous amount of color are incorporated throughout, and the mood runs the gamut from somber to whimsical. VERDICT Handwriting fans, calligraphy dabblers, and letter buffs of all ages and abilities will enjoy this book. © Copyright 2016.
