We are ready for a fun-filled March Break! Your Kitchener Public Library has lots of free programs running all week and there is something for everyone. For a complete list of programs happening at all Kitchener libraries please go to www.kpl.org or drop by and pick up a copy of In Touch.
Kitchener Public Library has a monthly Book Club for Boys in grades 3-6. In February we read and discussed the Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick. One of our members was not able to attend the meeting, so he sent a book review. The only word I can use to describe his review is EPIC! Please see Jacob's review below. I hope by sharing, it will encourage other young readers to pick up this wonderful tale and have a similar experience. "I have been waiting SOOOO long to write this cause I finished it on the same day you gave it to me and mom didn’t let me write this until closer to the club meeting that I would miss... 😞 But this book was AMAZING!!!!!! OK HERE WE GO!!!!! This is one of those books you read and while your reading it just get right dead centre into it! Some of the pictures just made you feel almost scaredly misterious. You can almost feel how Hugo's struggles are. The end was really magical with the performing and everything. I loved the character development and the overall feel of the story just MMMMMM This was a gooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooood booook! I cant express in words or ANYTHING how good this book is!" -Jacob Each year a committee of the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) creates a list of the best of the best of children’s books from the previous year. The titles chosen are announced at the American Library Association Midwinter Meeting in January. Below is a list of 25 picture books identified for this year's list that are also available at the Kitchener Public Library. Enjoy!
Valensteins by Ethan Long Frank K. Stein is making a Valentine's Day heart - but his friends in Fright Club can't figure out what the pink heart shaped thing is for. When they finally do find out -hilarity ensues. Very funny with a dash of sweet. Ages 4-8. Driving conditions today were not nice, and for many it was also the first day back to work and school after the holidays. Not an ideal start to the second week of January and I’m sure many youngsters hoped today might be a snow day. Alas, at least in our area, schools were open and buses were running.
Today reminded me of Before Morning by Joyce Sidman. A loving, gentle, tale about a child wishing desperately for a snow day so she can spend time with her family. Hooray! I'm excited to announce that the Children and Teen Services Department yearly "best of" lists are finally done! First up are the picture books. This Saturday October 28th, Central Library, Forest Heights Community Library, and Country Hills Community Library are hosting "Shivery Shenanigans" family programs at their locations. There will be not-so-scary monsters, silly pumpkins, and shy ghosts! A cauldron of fun for the whole family. Check our library program calendar for complete details and program times. In the meantime, why not check out a few of our new, and not-too-scary, tales below. Honk! Quack! Boo! by Tad Hills. Duck and Goose are dressing up for Halloween but friend Thistle is keeping her costume a surprise. A silly and sweet tale. Ages 3-6. Herbert's First Halloween by Cynthia Rylant is gentle tale about an anxious youngster not sure he wants to participate in Halloween. Ages 2-4. The Scariest Book Ever by Bob Shea is not scary. It is a silly tale about a small ghost overcoming his fear of the forest and the "scary" creatures within. Warning, this tale is FULL of giggles! Ages 5-9. Creepy Pair of Underwear by Aaron Reynolds and Peter Brown is the latest tale from the brilliant team that produced Creepy Carrots! A brave rabbit, a creepy pair of underwear, total hilarity. Ages 5-8. |
