A STORM IS COMING TO MONTAUK, LONG ISLAND.

As a massive hurricane approaches the Eastern Seaboard, FBI consultant Jake Cole must return to Montauk to care for his father, formerly a brilliant painter, now in the grip of madness. When a twisted serial killer strikes nearby, the local sheriff is ill equipped to battle an increasingly bold killer. Soon Jake finds himself dragged into the bloody case, all the while trying to care for a father he never wanted to see again.

As bodies pile up and the storm edges closer, Jake rushes to keep his family from harm and find the killer. It’s a race against the clock, and there are forces at work that could end up pushing Jake permanently into the dark. Robert Pobi’s brilliant debut thriller, Bloodman, is twisted, gritty, and utterly compelling. Slated for publication in nine countries, Bloodman is poised to take the world by storm.

A massive storm is brewing off the Eastern Seaboard, heading straight for Montauk, Long Island where Jake Cole has reluctantly returned to care for his estranged father who has slipped into dementia. But another killer is stalking these streets, a sadistic serial killer who strikes shortly after Jake’s arrival at his childhood home.

Jake an FBI consultant who, trust me is not your average garden variety, soon finds himself pulled into the hunt for the vicious killer.

This is a fast paced, edgy thriller that delivers with well wrought characters and a clever, keep you guessing plot that effectively infuses the reader with its chilling, anxious atmosphere. I did not see the final twist coming until it was right on top of me. I love when that happens!

An excellent debut from an author I will keep my eye on.

This psychological thriller grabbed me by the nose with the second paragraph and didn't let go until I hollered. And I didn't holler until the very end.

An eidetic memory must be a wonderful/terrible thing to have. Jake has studiously avoided even thinking about his father and the house in which he grew up. He has his reasons. Now, almost 30 years later, he forces himself to return to his childhood home. His father, a painter of some renown who is riddled with Alzheimer's, has suffered a horrific accident that just may have been self-imposed. Jake feels he needs to at least make an appearance, get some things settled, close up the house, etc.

Fantastic set-up, breakneck pacing, and a surprise ending made for a fine read. Be forewarned, graphic descriptions of crime scenes are included, and there are a couple of brief but harrowing passages of a sexual nature. Stay far away if things of this ilk tend to disturb you. It's dark, very dark. Will be on the lookout for more from this author.

Bloodline by Robert Pobi is one of the best psychological murder/mystery thrillers that I have ever read. This book was AMAZING!

FBI consultant Jake Cole reluctantly returns home to Montauk to look after his estranged father, famed painter Jacob Coleridge. Once a brilliant man, Coleridge is gripped by dementia and in a moment of madness set himself on fire. Jake is only there because his late mother would have expected him to look after his father. Shortly after he arrives in Montauk, Jake is called in to consult on the murder of a mother and child.

The writing is dark and gritty. Robert Pobi pulls you into the story as Jake works frantically with the local Sheriff to capture a serial killer. As the action escalates, Montauk is battered by a Category 5 hurricane. The wrath of the hurricane complements the twisted mind of the killer as both spiral out of control.

This novel had me guessing right until the bitter end. What an ending!
I wish I could have rated this novel as a 10 Star, because it was so amazing.I can't wait for his next novel. I will be watching for it.If you love reading mystery, suspense thrillers, don't miss out on this one.You won't be wasting your time.I will be thinking about this novel based on all the puzzles that had to be solved, for many days to come.

It had great potential but somewhere along the way the plot got lost...
I'm sure in the mind of the author the idea seemed brilliant but its execution lacked consistency!

At points it's quite repetitive and way too detailed in its descriptions!

The characters are likeable!

The resolution didn't convince me and I don't like stories that don't give all the answers! I would very much appreciate if I knew why he did the crime of the present since the motive for the past crime was explained!

Personally I wouldn't recommend it!

It's been a long time since I've read a first novel that enthralled and tested me like Robert Pobi's "The Bloodman"; an intriguing, complex thriller that twists it's way through a four day period in quiet Montauk, New York. Special Agent Jake Cole has come home after walking away from his abusive and alcoholic father twenty-eight years ago. His father, a talented painter now tortured by dementia, horribly maimed himself in a mysterious fire. Over the years, after battling his own demons, the anger and hatred Cole felt toward his father is now superseded by a numbing apathy. But as the only child to his widowed father, Cole feels it is his duty to attend to his affairs.

The night Cole arrives at his childhood home, now full of garbage and scotch bottles, he receives a call from the local sheriff. They found two bodies in a house up the beach from his father's place, a woman and a child both skinned alive. For Cole, this is a gut punch. The horrific scene at the crime is familiar, he recognizes the murderer's work from his own tortured past. Desperate to quickly finish his father's affairs and run home to his own wife and son, Cole now feels compelled to stay and work on this case. His eidetic memory, commonly referred to as photographic memory, allows him to reconstruct three-dimensional crime scenes in his mind, and provides him with an unusual skill that can assist the overwhelmed small town police force.

Everything about Agent Cole is unusual. A recovering substance abuse addict with the entire text of Dante's "Inferno" tattooed on his body, he can verbally shred an officer foolish enough to laugh at a crime scene, mentally suppress the graphic "pornography" of his job, and still come across as a devoted husband and father. He is a master at solving the puzzles left behind by murderers. With demons lurking in the corners of his own mind, he can relate to and decipher the thoughts and intentions of the monsters he is trained to hunt down. It is both a blessing and a curse.

Compounding the murders and the enigma of thousands of crazed paintings littering his father's house is a Category 5 hurricane headed directly for Montauk. With the storm pounding Montauk back to the stone age, Cole is desperately pursuing answers and the killer. It is a thrilling combination of events and puzzles and character drama that had me guessing up to the final haunting twist at the end.

Unbelievably, this being Pobi's first novel, he has presented a fiercely complex masterpiece with riveting scenes and compelling characters. The author has also cleverly painted clues into the layers upon layers that make up the final picture. There are puzzles within puzzles throughout the book. But his writing evokes clear images, whether of a graphic murder scene or a quiet moment between Cole and his wife. And I found myself anxiously tearing through the last 100 pages as the hurricane's destruction of the town starts to mirror the anguishing devastation of Cole's life as he knows it.

This is an incredible book that kept me thinking even after I finished. I hope it does well as the author definitely deserves kudos for his work. And, when he writes his next book, I will be in line ready to buy it.

When I first started reading this book, I found it so sinister & gross I was sort of creeped out to keep it in my bag or next to me on the couch. It had me checking the locks on the doors on my day off. But then it became so laughably bad, my psyche was spared from further onslaught & the creepy parts retreated under the awful ones.

Jake Cole is an FBI consultant with an eidetic memory which allows him to memorize crime scenes. He can’t seem to remember how many times he’s told the story about his pacemaker to certain people but this gift does allow him to get inside the heads of serial killers. He’s gone to his old hometown to see to his Alzheimer’s-y father Jacob Coleridge & gets pulled into investigating some homicides that redefine yucky. And here's where it gets spoilery -

Give me a break.

This is the part of my review where I give the finger to the author and the novel that I just read.
Bloodman. Shame on you.

What a disappointment and waste of a great story (idea, concept, characters, etc.) and great talent of a writer (you’re good Pobi, but better luck next time). I can’t imagine a worse book this year. I love thrillers. This book came very highly recommended from a number of friends as well as recommendations from this website. From what I heard, Bloodman was the must read thriller for people who like thrillers.

250 pages into this book, I would agree. This book is absolutely enthralling at first. I couldn’t put it down. Oh my God Bloodman is sooo good. I kept telling people. Then a few things started popping up which became “minor” issues for me.

Let’s first talk about the liberties the book takes. As someone whose favorite genre is the thriller, I’m willing to let a lot slide. However, Bloodman becomes ridiculous. We have a character who has a faulty heart (which conveniently knocks the lead character out at key points), a hurricane which is the storm of the century and is making everything hell, and a tiger shark! These were minor things, but seriously, with 100 pages left in this book, it goes to hell quick. I laughed out loud as this smart thriller became the equivalent of a Michael Bay film.

I loved the set-up. I loved the writing. I hated how it was handled. And honestly, when you throw so much into your book as Bloodman does (big set-up,big set-up,big set-up) that’s exactly where you’re assured to go. Hell. I marveled at first, because I thought, wow, he must have some amazing pay-off the way he is doing this. He (the author) doesn’t. I honestly expected BigFoot to show up and be the killer. The novel took over with its ludicrousness and the author lost track of himself. So of course, what we get is the cardinal sin of any great thriller. I won’t give the ending away. Let’s just say it’s lazy and full-on retard. Awful.

I’ll read Pobi’s next book however. Just to see if he’s learned his lesson.

The debut novel from the author of the brilliant “City Of Windows” is written with the assurance of a veteran, with a prose style which is elegant without being over-elaborate.
FBI consultant Jake Cole is in the coastal town of Montauk, Long Island, at the home of his long-estranged artist father when he is called to the scene of a nearby murder. An unknown woman and her young child have been skinned alive. Jake is a specialist at getting inside the minds of the most perverted of killers, but this time it’s personal. His mother was murdered in a similar fashion 30 years ago.
To make matters worse, a category five electric hurricane is heading directly for Montauk, so Jake and the local law enforcement are desperately hunting for the killer while the rest of Long Island is being evacuated. The frantic search through the ravaged island builds up to an almost unbearable seat-of-the-pants tension and the final revelation comes as a total shock, even though the clues have been laid out all through the novel.
This is certainly one the finest debut novels I’ve ever read and deserves nothing less than full marks.

I disliked almost everything about this book; the good guys, the serial killer and the sluggish pace made reading it a chore. Life is too short!

This book starts off strong. I really liked how Jake's history with his father was described right off the bat. It introduced us to Jake's character and his relationships in a direct manner which I appreciated. I also liked how the novel didn't waste any time in introducing the murder. This book is not for the squeamish! The details of the murder are really graphic so if you're not comfortable with graphic and stomach churning descriptions of murders, this book isn't for you. I definitely found it a little hard to stomach. Fortunately, there's plenty of time to recover from the vivid imagery.

The plot moves at a great pace and I liked how Jake wasn't the typical FBI agent. He had unique abilities that were quite interesting to read about. Jake is such a dark protagonist and his relationships are so atypical from any other FBI agent, but I found that to make him compelling. All of the characters were developed quite well and none of them seemed static and one dimensional.

The suspense in this novel increases dramatically as the book approaches its climax. I found myself unable to stop reading because I wanted to have all my questions answered. I absolutely loved how the book concluded. The ending is INCREDIBLE.

Robert Pobi is an excellent addition to the mystery genre and I think he's going to be extremely successful. Overall, this novel is a dark, chilling, and extremely unforgettable read. You MUST read it.

I received this book through the GoodReads FirstReads program.

Αυτή η περίπλοκη και ξεχωριστή προσωπικότητα είναι ένας συναρπαστικός αντιήρωας, που καλείται να εξιχνιάσει μια σειρά δολοφονιών από έναν άντρα που δε διστάζει να αφαιρέσει το δέρμα των θυμάτων του όσο αυτά είναι ακόμη ζωντανά! Ο όρος «αποεπιθηλιοποίηση» που χρησιμοποιείται για το γδάρσιμο θα με στοιχειώνει για καιρό! Ο συγγραφέας δε διστάζει να περιγράψει με οδυνηρά φριχτό και ναι, εμετικό, τρόπο τις συνθήκες θανάτου των θυμάτων, αναγκάζοντάς με πλειστάκις να κλείσω το βιβλίο ή να προχωρήσω βιαστικά παρακάτω. Έτσι λοιπόν, ο αναγνώστης έρχεται αντιμέτωπος με ένα διαφορετικό, ξεχωριστό αστυνομικό θρίλερ, που θα τον ξενυχτήσει και θα τον φέρει στα όριά του. Τι συνδέει τα θύματα που αυξάνονται με γεωμετρική πρόοδο όσο προχωράει το βιβλίο; Τι ρόλο έπαιξαν στη ζωή του Τζέικ Κόουλ ώστε κάποια στιγμη να καταλήξει στο συμπέρασμα ότι ο δολοφόνος τον κυνηγάει; Ποιος έχει ανοιχτούς λογαριασμούς μαζί του; Γιατί αποπειράθηκε ο πατέρας του να αυτοκτονήσει; Γιατί η μητέρα του, που δολοφονήθηκε με τον ίδιο τρόπο πάνω από τριάντα χρόνια πριν, ίσως ήταν το πρώτο θύμα του μανιακού Bloodman και γιατί εμφανίστηκε τώρα, σήμερα; Πώς θα προστατέψει ο Τζέικ τη γυναίκα του και τον γιο του, που αποφασίζουν να τον επισκεφθούν στο Μόντοκ, παρά τις αντιρρήσεις του; Μήπως έτσι μπουν κι αυτοί στο στόχαστρο; Πόσο θα επηρεάσει τις ζωές όλων ο επερχόμενος τυφώνας;

You know when you have a feeling about the final twist when you're only like 20 pages in the book!!! that happened to me! Mais l'auteur a bien réussi à me semer.

Bloodman
I make it a habit of never reading any reviews of a book on GR before I have read the book myself. After reading the book I write the first draft of my review and only then I check other reviews.
Bloodman left me gasping for breath and I still have a hard time getting the book out of my head. I wanted to read it in one sitting but I’m glad I was too busy to do that because now I could think about what I read. What did I read then? A story that may not be the most original; a ‘hero’ in the form of an FBI agent with a strange past (also not very original); gruesome murders; a big storm and several local policeman – also, nothing really original. According to several other reviewers, even the plot and the ending of the book did not live up to their expectations.
Well, I didn’t have any expectations before I started reading this book, except for the fact that I read Pobi’s City of Windows last March and I was deeply impressed, so I wanted to read more of this author.
I cannot pinpoint what made Bloodman so special for me, I really can’t. It is just a very, very intense book where you as reader, if you follow the clues, can see what went wrong and what is going to be even more wrong… and you cannot do anything, just read along.

Robert Pobi, Bloodman (Thomas and Mercer, 2012)

Full disclosure: this book was provided to me free of charge by Amazon Vine.

It is on page 60, with the last sentence of Chapter 9, that Bloodman blows up in your face. At that point it turns from an average, if overly descriptive, thriller into a good (if still overly descriptive) thriller. At some point, I'm not exactly sure where, in the thirty pages that follow that, Bloodman turns into a very good thriller indeed, the kind of book that has you sacrificing all of your available free time to read. It gets overly twee (in that annoying “aren't I clever?” sense) in the final third, but given that Pobi manages to almost pull off everything he's trying to do, I was far more forgiving of it here than I have been with some books (the obvious example, if you've been following my reviews long enough to remember me writing it up almost ten years ago, is Everything Is Illuminated).

Plot: Jake Cole is an FBI agent, but as the book opens, that is less important than the fact that he has returned to his childhood home for the first time in a quarter-century in order to deal with his father's advancing Alzheimer's. Jake's plan is to get in, get the decisions made, and get out, but of course things don't ever really work that way; his first night in town, he gets a call from the local sheriff—two bodies are found in a local sublet house, skinned. (Weak stomach warning: one of them is a child.) Jake is not only the closest Bureau agent to the scene, but he also specializes in ugly cases like this; he has an eidetic memory for crime scenes, and as the son of a famous painter, he has the kind of unofficial training in scene composition that allows him to look at things in ways most forensics people don't. That'll come in handy, given there's a time limit on solving the case: a Category Five hurricane is projected to make landfall right outside Jake's father's house in two days. Even worse, Jake takes one look at the crime scene and knows he's encountered this killer before...

There's an Ebert Rule in movies that also applies to a lot of genre mystery/thriller novels. The Internet is currently failing me on the exact quote, so I'll have to paraphrase for you: once you have exhausted all the other possibilities, the last person left is the killer. (You could doll that up in Sherlock Holmes-speak: “the last person left, however improbable...”. It went through my mind while I was reading Agatha Christie's The Secret Adversary, which may have invented the conceit.) These days, thriller writers who want to think outside the box are going to flaunt that rule—they will give you a number of scenarios that all seem quite plausible, including the real one, and tell you, subliminally, to take your pick before walloping you with the correct answer. You can see how this sort of thing could go very badly in the hands of an incompetent writer. Pobi, on the other hand, manages it with some panache, though if you're not paying close enough attention, you may find yourself asking a few questions at the end (I was paying close enough attention, and there were a couple of things that seemed a bit out of place). There's also one pivotal scene in the book that is told from two different perspectives, and it has the kind of clumsy handling that one sees in older mystery novels where the detective gathers everyone in the drawing room and explains how he solved the crime before dramatically naming the killer. (Again, we turn to Agatha Christie.) But to be perfectly honest, even though those things jarred me, by the time I got to page three-hundred-whatever and realized what Pobi was doing—another mark of a really solid genre thriller, for me, is that that one last piece of the puzzle doesn't click in my head until a few pages before the actual revelation, which is exactly what happened here—I didn't care as much as I probably should have. I had been thoroughly entertained by this book, and it had thoroughly entertained me in a way that was, if not novel, at least a sterling example of this new breed of wave-a-red-cape-in-front-of-your-audience mystery/thrillers. This is not a mystery that will change your life, but it is one that does its job, and does it exceptionally well; it's Mirage rather than The Usual Suspects. This makes it no less worth reading by any measure. If you're a fan of the genre, this is a must-read. *** ½

* SPOILERS* I picked up this book after reading Robert Pobi’s other novel, “City of Windows” -which I really loved. Bloodman is a good book, but not great, and certainly not the edge of your seat, nail-biter that is City of Windows. There are a lot of implausible parts to this book - in particular the way the main character’s father behaves and why - (why not just come out and say what needs to be said instead of allowing people to be brutally murdered?! ). What was the point of the fire and jumping through the window? And why waste so much time painting thousands of canvases? It just seemed a little far fetched to me. The main character, Special Agent Cole also seems a step too close to creepy to avoid detection for so long. And much about him isn’t really explained - where did he develop his particular skill for example? His detective skill and the other less palatable one!? I felt the story line dragged a little - there were a few times when I just wanted to get on with finding answers and it felt like Special Agent Cole was just filling time... the pace and attempt at tension just didn’t quite work for me. I felt like the author expected the gore of the murder scenes to take the place of real action and drama, but i just found it gross rather than entertaining. The twist at the end was well delivered but still a little implausible, as most ‘twists’ usually are I suppose. All in all it was an okay book.

I am always looking for a good scary read, and I had high hopes for this one. But unfortunately, this was a huge disappointment.

FBI agent Jake Cole comes back to his hometown after his ailing father has an accident. He soon gets caught up investigating a series of extremely grizzly murders, and finds himself questioning what is what isn't reality.

This book is very dark and brooding, which works for the premise. However the author not only went overboard on the minute details, but the characters tended to ramble on to the point where I found myself skimming ahead several times. It is hard for me to lose myself in a book if i find myself getting annoyed by how much the story is dragging. Bloodman could have done with some heavy editing, and probably about 100 less pages.

Several people have mentioned how shocking the ending was. I went into this book knowing absolutely nothing about the plot, but I still managed to figure out where the story was going, and what the supposed "twist" would end up being within the first 20-30 pages. That probably had a lot to do with why I didn't end up enjoying this as much as some other reviewers have.

FBI crime scene specialist Jake Cole has returned home to Montauk for the first time in decades where his estranged father is hospitalised after setting himself on fire in the throes of dementia. Then the local sheriff asks for his help: The brutally slaughtered and skinned bodies of a mother and her young son have been discovered, and Jake's talent and insights are desperately needed. Viewing the crime scene, Jake sees more than anyone could have expected: He recognises the killer's signature. It's the same one as that in his own mother's still unsolved homicide 33 years ago.

An uncompromisingly dark and brutal psychological thriller with one hell of a twist.
