The recently discovered corduroy
road suggests Uptown Waterloo has many secrets. Using historical
writings and audio recordings, all found at Kitchener Public Library,
playwright Sunil Kuruvilla has crafted this new story about the red
warehouses of Seagram’s Distilleries that long ago towered on Caroline Street
and the tunnels below Albert and King where booze was smuggled during
prohibition. The workers are gone but their spirits can still be found, in
bottles and in this play.
About Sunil Kuruvilla A graduate of the Yale
School of Drama, Sunil Kuruvilla has had plays produced at many theatres
including the Sundance Institute and the Shaw Festival; currently, he is
working on a commissioned play for the Stratford Festival. Also a television
writer, Sunil was recently a staff writer on a prime-time drama for NBC; he has
written movies for CTV and Showtime, and all the scripts for a 12-hour series
starring boxer George Foreman. Sunil was a finalist for a Governor General’s
Literary Award and he has received the Truman Capote Literary Fellowship, the
Cole Porter ASCAP Award, and Kitchener Public Library’s Dorothy Shoemaker
Literary Award years ago. When not working in the United States, Sunil teaches
at Conestoga College and lives happily in Waterloo with his wife Lisa and their
children Isaac, Samuel, and Anna.
