Library Journal Review

Eloisa Carstairs is a beautiful and desirable young woman with a terrible secret. Although she moves in Gilded Age Chicago's high society, she eschews male attention, scarred by her recent trauma. That is, until she meets handsome Det. Sean Ryan. Their mutual attraction is instant, but their unequal social standing is an obstacle. However, Eloisa soon confides in Ryan about the assault she endured, and he swears to protect her at all costs. His faith in Jesus and the power of prayer strikes a chord in Eloisa, but a serial killer targeting society women puts their romance on hold. VERDICT Fans of Erik Larson's The Devil in the White City will note that Gray's (Secrets of Sloane House) suspenseful historical draws on the same case of the serial killer who preyed on young women during the Chicago World's Fair of 1893. The author also evokes the hierarchical social lines and the difficulties of relationships among different classes. Still, love blooms in the most unlikely hearts. A wise choice for readers who enjoy their historicals with a thrilling touch of suspense and romance. (c) Copyright 2015. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
