Summary
Summary
Set in Minnesota, Gone to Dust is the New York Times bestselling debut private eye murder mystery from Emmy Award-winning Seinfeld writer Matt Goldman.
"Sharp wit, complex characters, and masterful plotting makes Goldman a writer to watch. Irreverent and insightful, private detective Nils Shapiro is sure to become a fan favorite."--Harlan Coben, New York Times bestselling author
A brutal crime. The ultimate cover-up. How do you solve a murder with no useable evidence?
Private detective Nils Shapiro is focused on forgetting his ex-wife and keeping warm during another Minneapolis winter when a former colleague, neighboring Edina Police Detective Anders Ellegaard, calls with the impossible.
Suburban divorcee Maggie Somerville was found murdered in her bedroom, her body covered with the dust from hundreds of emptied vacuum cleaner bags, all potential DNA evidence obscured by the calculating killer.
Digging into Maggie's cell phone records, Nils finds that the most frequently called number belongs to a mysterious young woman whose true identity could shatter the Somerville family--but could she be guilty of murder?
After the FBI demands that Nils drop the case, Nils and Ellegaard are forced to take their investigation underground, where the case grows as murky as the contents of the vacuum cleaner bags. Is this a strange case of domestic violence or something with far reaching, sinister implications?
"A perfect blend of light touch and dark story--I want more of Nils Shapiro." --Lee Child, New York Times bestselling author

Publisher's Weekly Review
At the start of Emmy Award-winning TV writer and playwright Goldman's well-paced, humorous fiction debut, the police call Minneapolis-based PI Nils "Shap" Shapiro to a crime scene at the home of divorcée Maggie Somerville in Edina, Minn. Inside the house, it looks as if someone has dumped the contents of innumerable vacuum-cleaner bags over every surface, including Maggie's dead body, which is lying on her bed. Shap's sleuthing into this bizarre murder takes him from picture-perfect suburbs to the extravagant mansion of a wealthy real estate tycoon. Along the way, he passes through the apartment of a beautiful medical student and the plant-filled, overheated home of an entrepreneurial organic sheep farmer, with stops at many a bar and restaurant. With his wry, observant eye and quick wit, plus a pressing need to follow the truth into dark, uncharted places, Shap is a more optimistic version of Ross MacDonald's Lew Archer. Readers will look forward to his next investigative adventure. Agent: Jennifer Weltz, Jean V. Naggar Literary Agency. (Aug.) © Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved.
Booklist Review
A murder scene obscured by the dust from hundreds of vacuum cleaner bags opens this clever and compelling mystery set in a Minnesota January. Nils Shapiro is a private eye hired by his former police academy classmate who is now a detective in a suburban Minneapolis police department ill-equipped to solve this particular crime. The victim was a divorcée with no enemies and a boyfriend too self-involved to kill her. Political aspirations, a mystery woman, an FBI investigation, the frozen landscape, and red herrings all interfere with the aggregation of clues as Nils befriends an array of characters and suspects and manages his beautiful ex-wife. The resolution of the murder surprises and satisfies. Goldman's experience as a stand-up comic, playwright, and TV writer show to advantage in this first novel's wit, the story's pace, and his hero's charm. Offer this one (the start of a proposed series) to aficionados of chilly Scandinavian noir and the new generation of Philip Marlowe fans.--Moroni, Alene Copyright 2010 Booklist
Library Journal Review
Minneapolis PI Nils Shapiro, unsuccessfully trying to forget his ex-wife while coping with a brutal winter, is asked by former police colleagues to investigate a vicious crime that lacks traceable evidence. The body of the murder victim, Maggie Somerville, was covered with dust from emptied vacuum cleaner bags to eliminate potential DNA evidence. Shapiro digs into Maggie's life and finds a shadowy connection to a mysterious young woman; his probe also comes into conflict with an FBI investigation, but despite being warned off the case, Shapiro tracks down a calculating murderer to expose a cover-up with disturbing repercussions. Verdict Emmy Award-winning writer Goldman (for Seinfeld and Ellen), who began his career as a stand-up comedian, not surprisingly blends his storytelling with irreverent humor. His tough yet vulnerable PI, evocative Minneapolis setting, and clever plot, which features a distinctive crime scene and multiple red herrings, will engage and intrigue.
