Gaines (The Magnolia Story) here offers listeners a summary of his life, how he built his businesses, how to work with a spouse, and his overall business choices and life philosophies. Gaines could not read in first grade and even now has trouble with it. He learned how to work hard and be dedicated from his grandfather and father and from baseball. He was cut from his college baseball team in his sophomore year and then started his own landscaping company. Listeners will find out how Gaines got the scar on his forehead and his several mottoes, including "do not live in fear" and "bet on yourself." Fans of the television show Fixer Upper will learn why the Gaineses have chosen to stop filming after season five. The book concludes with commentary on meeting people with different views and the importance of having passion for life. As a narrator, Gaines seems to forget he is reading, and his fun personality and infectious laugh shine through. His wife, Joanna, reads the foreword and part of the epilog. VERDICT Part memoir, part business manual, and part motivational text, this is recommended for fans of Fixer Upper, who will find this story of Gaines's life and entrepreneurial style engaging.-Jason L.
