Staff Picks: Vita Nostra by Marina and Sergey Dyachenko

Vita Nostra by Marina & Sergey Dyachenko

A sixteen-year-old girl’s life takes some very weird turns when she notices a strange man watching her during her beach vacation with her mother. Every time Shasha successfully evades the stranger, she awakens in a terrifying time loop until she finally agrees to hear his bizarre request.

At precisely four in the morning, Shasha is instructed to swim out to a buoy in the ocean. When she complies, she receives three gold coins and is ordered to continue the practice daily. But when she oversleeps one morning, a close family friend pays the consequences.

#ShelfLife - February 16, 2018

Happy Friday, fellow book lovers! School's out for a holiday break and we've seen lots of patrons visit the library today as they check out books to read over the rainy long weekend.

Please remember that all FCPL locations will be closed on Monday, February 19 in observance of Presidents' Day, but the eLibrary is always open at www.forsythpl.org.

Authors of Instagram were showing us some love on this Valentine week: Cookbook author Elettra Wiedemann stopped by to comment on our photo of her book Impatient Foodie: 100 Delicious Recipes for a Hectic, Time-Starved World. On Valentine's Day we announced that Johanna Luthman, author of Love, Madness, and Scandal: The Life of Frances Coke Villiers, Viscountess Purbeck, will visit the Cumming Library on March 5 as part of our Tying the Windsor Knot royal wedding series.

What was your favorite #ShelfLife photo this week? Leave a comment below and let us know!

It’s warm today (we’re attempting to ignore the wind) and we’re all impatient for spring to arrive. While there’s some rain headed our way, we hope you’ll find a moment to get outside with a good book this weekend. Go wild and take a picnic with you! We’re reading SPRING FEVER by Mary Kay Andrews (@marykayandrews) and IMPATIENT FOODIE: 100 DELICIOUS RECIPES FOR A HECTIC, TIME-STARVED WORLD by Elettra Wiedemann (@impatientfoodie) under a tree full of lovely blossoms. . . What are you reading this weekend? . . Don’t forget that all FCPL locations will be closed on Monday, February 19 in observance of Presidents’ Day. Stop by for your books this weekend, or check them out from your computer or smart device at www.forsythpl.org. #ShelfLife #amreading #FridayReads #spring #marykayandrews #springfever #fiction #impatientfoodie #cookbook #nonfiction #librariesofinstagram #bookstagram #readersofinstagram #goodreads #ForsythReads #FCPLstories

#ShelfLife - January 26, 2018

What a week! We celebrated #LibraryShelfieDay by posting photos of books from our list of Staff Favorites of 2017. Our patrons got in on the fun of recommending their favorite books and we reposted their reviews for My Absolute Darling and Howl's Moving Castle earlier this week.

What are you reading this weekend? Leave us a comment below and your book could be featured on our #ShelfLife feed next week!

Looking for something funny to read this weekend? Check out GOOD OMENS: THE NICE AND ACCURATE PROPHECIES OF AGNES NUTTER, WITCH by Terry Pratchett and @neilhimself. While not new, this book is a perennial favorite among sci-fi and fantasy readers. Those who’ve longed to see this story on the screen will get their wish, as a six-episode miniseries of GOOD OMENS is expected to be released on Amazon Prime Video in 2019. Find this book and other wonderful works of fiction in our list of Staff Favorites of 2017. Simply go to catalog.forsythpl.org and click Reader's Corner - Adults in the left menu, and then click Staff Favorites of 2017. #ShelfLife #FridayReads #WeekendReads #amreading #StaffFavoritesof2017 #ForsythReads #FCPLstories #fiction #scifi #fantasy #sciencefiction #terrypractchett #neilgaiman #goodomens

From the author of the SOUTHERN REACH TRILOGY comes a story about two humans, and two creatures. The humans are Rachel and Wick -- a scavenger and a drug dealer -- both with too many secrets and fears, ready with traps to be set and sprung. The creatures are Mord and Borne -- animal, perhaps plant, maybe Company discard, biotech, cruel experiment, dinner, deity, or source of spare parts. Use your library card to place a hold on BORNE by Jaff VanderMeer at catalog.forsythpl.org. While you're there, click Reader's Corner - Adults in the left menu, and then click Staff Favorites of 2017 to find other wonderful books on our list of Staff Favorites of 2017. #ShelfLife #StaffFavoritesof2017 #ForsythReads #FCPLstories #fiction #amreading #jeffvandermeer #borne #biotech #biotechnology #scifi #sciencefiction #southernreachtrilogy

Today is Library Shelfie Day! We're celebrating all day long with photos of books from our Staff Favorites of 2017 in the stacks! Place a hold and check 'em out with your library card at catalog.forsythpl.org. Can you imagine... a second American Civil War, a devastating plague, and one family caught deep in the middle--a story that asks what might happen if America were to turn its most devastating policies and deadly weapons upon itself. Sarat Chestnut, born in Louisiana, is only six when the Second American Civil War breaks out in 2074. But even she knows that oil is outlawed, that Louisiana is half underwater, and that unmanned drones fill the sky. When her father is killed and her family is forced into Camp Patience for displaced persons, she begins to grow up shaped by her particular time and place. But not everyone at Camp Patience is who they claim to be. Read more in Egyptian-Canadian journalist Omar El Akkad's debut novel AMERICAN WAR. #LibraryShelfieDay #ShelfLife #amreading #librariesofinstagram #bookstagram #scifi #sciencefiction #fiction #debutnovel #AmericanWar #omarelakkad #StaffFavoritesof2017 #ForsythReads #FCPLstories

#ShelfLife Turns 18!

Librarians love lists, right? So, as we began making our list of Staff Favorites of 2017, we realized that today marks 18th month since we first started bringing you recommended reads and new materials in our #ShelfLife feed on Instagram.

You – all the readers, authors, and booklovers who make up our circle of friends - are what make it so much fun to search the stacks for hidden gems and rip the wrapping off freshly printed books so we can snap a shelfie.

We appreciate the time you take to visit us (virtually and IRL), to like or comment, and to read the books we share. It’s our great pleasure to share in the #ShelfLife with you.

So, let's get to it! A recap of the books we've shared this week is below. If you've found a great book, be sure to leave us a comment and your book could be featured in the #ShelfLife next week!

Last Sunday there was a story in the AJC about Hilde Lysiak, the 10-year-old reporter who founded her own neighborhood newspaper that went viral in April 2016 by breaking the story on a homicide long before the local media. This week, we’re excited to announce that the first in a six-book series featuring Hilde will arrive on library shelves. The book, HILDE CRACKS THE CASE: HERO DOG! was written by Hilde with assistance from her dad, Matthew Lysiak, and is especially great for newly independent readers ages 5 to 8 who are ready to read on their own, but not quite ready for conventional chapter books. Place a hold on HILDE CRACKS THE CASE: HERO DOG! with your library card at catalog.forsythpl.org today! #ShelfLife #FridayReads #amreading #reporter #HildeLysiak #kidlit #childrensbooks #chapterbooks #read #bookstagram #librariesofinstagram #ForsythReads #FCPLstories #goodreads

#ShelfLife - October 20, 2017

It's finally fall, friends! We can sit outside in the early mornings, wrapped up in both a blanket and a good book. We can tell spooky stories around campfires or simply sit and enjoy a brisk breeze.

Whatever your favorite fall activity is, we hope you'll pause a moment to stop by the library or make a virtual visit to our eLibrary and find a book, some music, or a movie to enjoy this season. If you're looking for a recommendation, check out our #ShelfLife feed on Instagram. This week's round-up includes books on pasta, purses, and progeny, with a side of cupcakes!

As always, we'd love to hear about what you're reading. Love it or hate it, you can tag us in a photo or leave a comment about what you're reading and we'll share it on our Instagram feed. Have a great weekend, everyone!
