Poyer's gripping sequel to 2016's Onslaught, which continues the story arc of a war with China, finds U.S. Navy officer Dan Lenson promoted to admiral and put in charge of a task force to clear the sea lanes around Guam. Lenson's mission also includes landing a contingent of Marines to reconquer an island under Chinese control. Thus far America and her allies have been "surprised, outmaneuvered, outthought, and overwhelmed" by the Chinese. The only bright spot is that the carriers are still holding east of Hawaii. Lenson and his crew have fought some terrible battles and barely survived, but worse horrors lie ahead. Intense and bloody only begin to describe the realism of the combat scenes. Meanwhile, back in Washington, Lenson's wife, Blair Titus, the vice president of a think tank, is advising the U.S. government on strategy to counter the Chinese, and, in western China, Teddy Oberg of SEAL Team Eight is starving in a POW camp. The third book in the terrifyingly real War with China series separates our various heroes as the battle escalates. Readers unfamiliar with the series should start at the beginning with Tipping Point (2015) and Onslaught (2016) to develop an appreciation for the characters and the situation that starts the conflict. Here Dan Lenson receives a promotion to admiral and is given command of a joint U.S.-South Korea force. The hope is that the allies can regroup while the force keeps the sea-lanes open. Meanwhile, Lenson's wife is in Washington, D.C., fighting for a proper military and political response to the events that are happening on the other side of the world, and SEAL Teddy Oberg is trapped in a POW camp. David Poyer, 1949 - Writer David Poyer was born in DuBois, Pennsylvania, in 1949, and grew up in the towns of Brockway, Emlenton, and Bradford in western Pennsylvania. He graduated from high school and then attended the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, graduating in 1971. He received a master's degree from George Washington University.

Poyer's active and reserve service have included sea duty in the Atlantic, Mediterranean, Arctic, Caribbean, and Pacific and shore duty at the Pentagon, as well as other commands. He has served on the USS Bowen, Comphibron Eight, USS Charleston, USS Antrim, Surface Warfare Development Group, U.S. Atlantic Command and as Captain for the U.S. Naval Reserve at Joint Forces Command. Poyer has taught or lectured at Annapolis, Flagler College, University of Pittsburgh, Old Dominion University, the Armed Forces Staff College, and the University of North Florida. He's been a guest on PBS's "Writer to Writer" series and on Voice of America.

Poyer has written the Navy novels "The Med," "The Gulf," "The Circle," "The Passage," and "Tomahawk." He has also written the historical thriller "The Only Thing to Fear" and the comic novel of Annapolis "The Return of Philo T. McGiffin." "Thunder on the Mountain" is a historical novel set in 1936; and set in the Pennsylvania hills, are the titles "The Dead of Winter," "Winter in the Heart" and "As the Wolf Loves Winter."
