Tom Gauld is a cartoonist and illustrator. He has weekly comic strips in The Guardian and New Scientist and his comics have been published in The New York Times and The Believer . In addition to his graphic novels Goliath , You ' re All Just Jealous of My Jetpack , and Mooncop , he has designed a number of book covers. Gauld lives and works in London.

Publisher's Weekly Review

The typical venues for the work of Scottish cartoonist Gauld (Mooncop)-the Guardian, the New York Times, and the New Yorker-are a good indication of the sensibility behind it. Gauld's cartoons are preoccupied with literature and the shop talk of the writers who write it, going off on tangents about specific authors and literary works, as well as narrative devices, classic literature mashed up with modern sensibilities, and self-loathing. That last topic is part of a larger preoccupation with the lonely work of being a writer that Gauld chronicles with a vicious cruelty that is obviously self-directed. He also offers vignettes of fictional characters and the books themselves as sentient victims that are put upon by their creators. The art is dominated by shadowy stick figures that inhabit often complex spaces, which somehow makes it all the more droll. (Oct.) © Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved.

British cartoonist Gauld is best known stateside for his graphic novels Mooncop (2016) and Goliath (2017), but his most visible effort on his side of the pond is his weekly comic strip in the Guardian newspaper, aimed at a literate, book-loving audience. His wry cartoons skewer literary and cultural mainstays ranging from literary prizes and critics to film adaptations and Jonathan Franzen. Many juxtapose bookish conventions with modern technology: e-readers with used-book simulation (including old book smell and simulated damage, such as coffee stains and catastrophic spine collapse); War and Peace clickbait (These two men dueled. The outcome will surprise you!); libraries of the future (sentient books say, I'm overdue. Please take me back to the library); and early appearances of the smartphone in literature (Robinson Crusoe gets a no signal message). Gauld's sparse graphics are secondary to the jokes, although his minimalist visual approach is well suited for the conceptual gags.
