Lin-Manuel Miranda's groundbreaking musical Hamilton is as revolutionary as its subject, the poor kid from the Caribbean who fought the British, defended the Constitution, and helped to found the United States. Fusing hip-hop, pop, R&B, and the best traditions of theater, this once-in-a-generation show broadens the sound of Broadway, reveals the storytelling power of rap, and claims our country's origins for a diverse new generation.
Hamilton: The Revolution gives readers an unprecedented view of both revolutions, from the only two writers able to provide it. Miranda, along with Jeremy McCarter, a cultural critic and theater artist who was involved in the project from its earliest stages -- "since before this was even a show," according to Miranda -- traces its development from an improbable performance at the White House to its landmark opening night on Broadway six years later. In addition, Miranda has written more than 200 funny, revealing footnotes for his award-winning libretto, the full text of which is published here.
Their account features photos by the renowned Frank Ockenfels and veteran Broadway photographer, Joan Marcus; exclusive looks at notebooks and emails; interviews with Questlove, Stephen Sondheim, leading political commentators, and more than 50 people involved with the production; and multiple appearances by President Obama himself. The book does more than tell the surprising story of how a Broadway musical became a national phenomenon: It demonstrates that America has always been renewed by the brash upstarts and brilliant outsiders, the men and women who don't throw away their shot.
Author Notes
Lin-Manuel Miranda is an award-winning composer, lyricist, and performer, as well as a 2015 MacArthur Foundation Award recipient. His most recent musical, Hamilton - with book (which is a New York Times bestseller), music and lyrics by Miranda, in addition to him playing the title role - opened on Broadway in 2015 and was awarded the 2016 Pulitzer Prize in Drama.
The Original Broadway Cast Recording of Hamilton won the 2016 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album.
Hamilton won an OBIE for Best New American Play and is the 2015 recipient of the Edward M. Kennedy Prize for Drama Inspired by American History. Material from the show was previewed at the White House during its first-ever Evening of Poetry & Spoken Word in 2009, in Lincoln Center Theater's 2012 American Songbook Series and at New York Stage and Film's 2013 Powerhouse Theatre Season at Vassar College.
Miranda's first Broadway musical, In the Heights, received four 2008 Tony Awards (including Best Orchestrations, Best Choreography and Best Musical), with Miranda receiving a Tony Award for Best Score, as well as a nomination for Best Leading Actor in a Musical.
He is the author of Gmorning, Gnight!, published in October 2018.
Miranda received a B.A. from Wesleyan University in 2002. In May of 2009, Miranda received the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa, from Yeshiva University, the youngest recipient of such an honor in the University's 123-year history. He received his B.A. from Wesleyan University in 2002.

The hip-hop musical Hamilton: The Revolution has earned its own biography, which highlights the obstacles, influences, and powerful moments from its development to its Broadway success. McCarter narrates the introduction (which he wrote), and one can hear the excitement and enthusiasm he still has for both the musical and his work with Miranda. Actress Hargitay, longtime star of NBC's Law & Order: SVU, covers the lion's share of this performance, and she does an astounding job. She captures the energy and enthusiasm of the various people quoted throughout the book, while capturing the emphasis and tone to draw out some of the more emotional moments. Miranda chimes in for the last hour, reading-and at times singing-footnotes on the libretto, without the actual context of the script, which will be confusing for listeners who do not have the print book to follow along. With 16 Tony nominations and sold-out shows through 2016, Hamilton is the year's hottest ticket. Whether it's a fan who has gotten into the sacred room where it happens or one simply blasting the cast recording on repeat, all will be eager to pore over this brilliant behind-the-scenes tome. Composer and show star Miranda joins forces with critic and former Public Theater producer McCarter to deliver the details of this theatrical gem, from its humble beginnings to its extraordinary social impact. Beautifully constructed, the book looks as if it could have easily come from the real Alexander Hamilton's library; its rough-cut pages are filled with gorgeous photos and the play's full libretto. Readers will devour the backstage stories from the crew and original cast, which offer touching personal journeys and deeper insight into the play's beloved characters. Miranda's footnotes provide the biggest draw. A treasure trove of information, they highlight his writing process, musical influences (ranging from show tunes to pop to hip-hop), amusing anecdotes, and so much more. Verdict This is required reading for anyone interested in theater production, culture and diversity, or American history. Highly recommended.
