Exploring Rhythm with Clip Clop
Clip Clop by Nicola Smee is an entertaining book to share with kids because it includes recognizable animals such as a horse, a pig, and a dog that get into a little bit of mischief. It also introduces onomatopoeia with sound words like “clip” and “clop.” Parents and children can talk about what they think will happen next which is a great way to incorporate narrative skills.
Expand the Book with Rhythm Sticks!
While
reading the book, you can have your child hold rhythm sticks. Not
many parents have actual rhythm sticks, but you can improvise with
writing utensils, sticks, or other household objects.
(Spoiler alert: any stick is a rhythm stick if you use it to make rhythm!)
Every time you
read “clip clop, clippity clop,” have your child tap the sticks
together or on the ground along with the book. This is a great way to
introduce an element of play to the story, and to improve
phonological awareness by
helping your child recognize the rhythm of the words.
