Wilkes County was organized in 1777 from the northern part of Saint Paul's parish. Originally Wilkes County included all of Elbert, Oglethorpe, and Lincoln counties and part of Warren, Greene, and Talliaferro counties. Elbert County was created in December 1790.

Description
The 1855 population census for Illinois was compiled in each county by census commissioners appointed by the county commissioners and filed with the Secretary of State. Each county's return includes name of county and frequently names or legal descriptions of subdivisions (e.g., townships, cities, villages). Besides entries for each household, the census also include statistics for colleges and common schools with their enrollment figures.
