The Dark Horse Book of Horror
by Scott Allie (editor)
From the publisher: "Mike Mignola, Hellboy, and a roster of great creators and characters explore the dark corners of the horror genre in 35 stories of witchcraft, ghosts, and the risen dead. Originally published in four award-winning anthologies, these stories featured the debut of Evan Dorkin and Jill Thompson's Beasts of Burden series, and standalone stories by Kelley Jones, Kurt Busiek, and many others. In addition to the comics, Gary Gianni (Hellboy: Into the Silent Sea) illustrates stories by legendary authors such as Robert E Howard (Conan) and William Hope Hodgson (The House on the Borderland), and Scott Allie interviews experts in the occult fields, including a seance medium, and witch who specializes in love spells."

everyone's a aliebn when ur a aliebn too
by Jomny Sun
From the publisher: "everyone's a aliebn when ur a aliebn too is the illustrated story of a lonely alien sent to observe Earth, only to meet all sorts of creatures with all sorts of perspectives on life, love, and happiness, all while learning to feel a little better about being an alien--based on the enormously popular Twitter account, @jonnysun. [...] Through this story of a lost, lonely and confused alien finding friendship, acceptance, and love among the creatures of Earth, we will all learn how to be a little more human. And for all of us earth-bound creatures here on this planet, we can all be reminded that sometimes, it takes an outsider to help us see ourselves for who we truly are"

Calamity Jane: The Calamitous Life of Martha Jane Cannary, 1852-1903
by Christian Perrissin and Matthiew Blanchin
From the publisher: "Return to the real-life days of the wild, wild West where the life was rough... especially for women. The prototypical cowgirl, Calamity Jane was a bona fide frontierswoman, a professional scout, drunk, and sometime whore, doing whatever it took to stay alive in the hardscrabble days of American expansion. [...] Presented in English for the first time ever, this graphic novel illustrates the extraordinary tale of an independent woman with gumption -- the incredible Calamity Jane!"

Comics Art
by Paul Gravett
Patrick says: I can't imagine a better introduction to the breadth and diversity of the comics medium, much less one this accessible and even welcoming to read. Gravett's book looks at comics from several different angles, including history, diversity of representation, and narrative structure, and more. Besides being good for any comics lover, this would also be a great way to show skeptical loved ones the immense artistic and narrative power of this body of work. Highest recommendations!

Matt Wagner's Grendel omnibus vol. 1 & 2
by Matt Wagner et al
These volumes collect the complete story of playboy-thief-assassin Hunter Rose, called "Grendel", as well as those of his victims and colleagues, before projecting into the future to follow others who have adopted the Grendel mantle, for better or worse. Epic in scale, gritty in tone, and often beautiful in visuals!

Wilson
by Daniel Clowes
From the publisher: "Meet Wilson, an opinionated middle-aged loner who loves his dog and quite possibly no one else. In an ongoing quest to find human connection, he badgers friend and stranger alike into a series of one-sided conversations, punctuating his own lofty discursions with a brutally honest, self-negating sense of humor. After his father dies, Wilson, now irrevocably alone, sets out to find his ex-wife with the hope of rekindling their long-dead relationship, and discovers he has a teenage daughter, born after the marriage ended and given up for adoption. Wilson eventually forces all three to reconnect as a family--a doomed mission that will surely, inevitably backfire."

Exquisite Corpse
by Pénélope Bagieu
From the publisher: "Zoe isn't the intellectual type, which is why she doesn't recognize world-famous author Thomas Rocher when she stumbles into his apartment...and into his life. It's also why she doesn't know that Rocher is supposed to be dead. Rocher faked his death years ago to escape his critics, and has been making a killing releasing his new work as "lost manuscripts," in cahoots with his editor/ex-wife Agathe. Zoe doesn't know Balzac from Batman, but she's going to have to wise up fast... because she's sitting on the literary scandal of the century!"
