Anderson (Eternity's Mind) and Hoyt (the Darkship series) join forces for this whimsical "muskets and magic" alternate history of Lewis and Clark's voyage through an American West populated by an array of scary creatures and mystical beings. The 1759 appearance of Halley's Comet created the Sundering in the Atlantic Ocean, a barrier separating Europe and America. Magic has resurfaced in the New World. In 1803, the great centenarian wizard, Benjamin Franklin, commissions herbalist Meriwether Lewis and Army Captain William Clark to travel west to the Pacific and find passage to the Old World. The expedition's ambitious and resourceful men discover a resentful entity in the form of a fire-breathing dragon that is terrorizing Natives and white men alike by summoning zombies, a fire demon, a river serpent, and even a reanimated T. rex. Helping the expedition is courageous Shoshone teenager Sacagawea, who encourages Lewis to tap into his latent magical powers and joins him on a journey through the land of dead. Uncharted, the debut novel in the Arcane America universe, presents an alternate history in which the explosion of Halley's Comet created a impassable mystic veil across the Atlantic Ocean, separating America from the rest of the world and filling the newly isolated continent with a variety of magical phenomena. After facing off a dragon attack upon the famed wizard Ben Franklin, Meriwether Lewis is tasked with putting together an expedition west both to find a possible route back to Europe through the Pacific and to try to uncover the source of a wave of mysterious and increasingly violent attacks on Natives and settlers alike. Joined by his old friend Clark and a young Shoshone woman named Sacagawea, who is searching for her lost husband, Lewis journeys into the heart of the unexplored frontier. With a light and brisk narrative that propels its heroes through a number of increasingly dangerous situations, this combination of alternate history and fantasy should appeal to fans of Eric Flint, Harry Turtledove, andhistorical fantasy in general.--Keep, Alan Copyright 2010 Booklist
