Publisher's Weekly Review
Eisner Award-winning colorist Bellaire's debut writing effort is a stellar feminist occult horror comic. The first volume takes place in rural Florida, where a coven took over the town of Redlands in 1977 "to make new, through sacrifice." In present day, the coven is Redlands' police force, attempting to maintain control in the wake of a serial killer's rampage. Laurent, a friend and ally of the coven since the '70s, finds the killer, decapitates him, and feeds him to alligators. During this battle, a witch named Bridget almost drowns and becomes possessed by Nancy, a dead sex worker forced into servitude by the monstrous pimp Zuzu. Bridget grants Nancy permission to use her body and track down her former captor. The spine-tingling adventure is filled with examples of sexual harassment, such as a principal propositioning one of his female students for sex, adding emotional terror to the spooky mix. Monsters abound, but even the supernatural characters evoke humanity and empathy. Del Rey's fine-lined watercolor-style art makes even gore look gorgeous and sets an ominous mood which elevates the suspense. This dark campfire tale is both politically relevant and terrifying. Library Journal Review
The wetlands of Redlands, FL, hide a variety of mysteries from the light of day. In 1977, three witchy sisters waded into town and annihilated the existing corrupt police force with their violence and power. In the present day, puzzles continue to bubble up from the swampland, such as how those same sisters have become law enforcement themselves in order to establish great cover stories for when they make human sacrifices as well as hide evidence that could implicate them in such crimes. Trouble begins when a serial killer arrives with knowledge of the siblings' secrets, and the bad times continue when the ghost of a murdered woman takes over the body of one sister in an attempt to solve her own killing, regardless of the wishes of the host body. Bellaire (The Massive) and Del Rey (Hit), with letterer Cowles (Pretty Deadly), deliver an opening volume (collecting single issues 1-6) of an ongoing series that gives every impression of deeper story lines without providing excessive detail. Verdict Some scenes contain extreme, gory violence and robust sexuality, and the narrative doesn't tie up every episode nicely. Overall, it's worth taking a midnight stroll with this expressionistic horror tale.-Douglas Rednour, Georgia State Univ. Libs., Atlanta © Copyright 2018.
