This book explores Georgia O'Keeffe's love for Hawaii through more than 15 paintings inspired by the beautiful landscape.

In 1939, Georgia O'Keeffe, who was among the most famous artists in the United States, accepted a commission from the Hawaiian Pineapple Company to produce two paintings for advertising campaigns. Her nine-week trip to Hawai'i resulted in more than 20 paintings, which reveal that O'Keeffe--most commonly associated with the stark deserts of New Mexico--was profoundly inspired by what she saw and experienced on the lush, tropical Hawaiian Islands. The exhibition Georgia O'Keeffe: Visions of Hawai'i , and this accompanying volume, explores this little-known chapter in the artist's career. Glowing with color, these paintings demonstrate O'Keeffe's unique ability to make any place her own. This landmark volume offers a unique perspective by foregrounding the ecological complexity that is hidden behind O'Keeffe's depictions of Hawai'i-one of the most biologically diverse places on Earth.

With essays by botanists; art, culture, and material historians; curators; conservationists, and specialists on Hawai'i, this beautifully illustrated exhibition catalog delves into a little-known subject of O'Keeffe's art and is especially timely when taken in the context of the currently active volcanic eruptions in Hawai'i. In 1939, O'Keeffe received a commission from the Hawai'ian Pineapple Company (now Dole) for two advertising images. As a modernist, O'Keeffe sought artistic inspiration in various settings, and by the 1920s, when tourism rivaled agriculture as the island's main income, she overcame stereotypes from tourist propaganda to paint "the things in my head that are not like what anyone has taught me." Unfortunately, all of O'Keeffe's Hawai'ian botanical art is of nonnative plants, owing to their introductions from early Polynesian settlers, seeds in the dirt of ships' ballast, and today's luxury condominium developers. Additional features include 20 images and a list of selected plants of Hawai'i.
